About the Conference:

The 2011 SPE Northwest regional conference will examine what many media theorists describe as a ‘21st Century Renaissance’ brought about by innovations in digital imaging and internet technology that are comparable to the impact of Gutenberg’s press.

The transformation from analog to digital and the convergence of still and motion photography into compact media technology constitutes a renegotiation of traditional ideas about photography and visual literacy that is emerging into questions about how photographers are addressing the impact of New Media.

1. Kress Gallery - SPE Member Group Show

The Kress Gallery is hosting the 2011 Society for Photographic Education Northwest Regional Conference Member Exhibition. The theme of the conference is “Visual Evolution” and will feature a wide range of image-making techniques and genres that celebrate the convergence of historic and contemporary photographic technologies. This group show will feature work by artists and educators from throughout the country.

2. Spokane Public Library - Eye of the World

The downtown branch of the Spokane Public Library is hosting a photography exhibition in conjunction with the November "First Friday Arts Tour" and the SPE Northwest Conference.

Images by social documentary photographers all over the United States are being presented in an exhibition titled “Eye on the World”. The show celebrates the role photography plays in shaping our understanding of the world and asks the viewer to consider the questions posed by Dorthea Lange to every photograph: “Is this my world? If not, what does it have to do with my world?”

3. Spokane Falls Community College - Lost and Found

The Spokane Falls Community College Photography Program is hosting a gallery exhibition titled “Lost and found” features hand made artist books by Frank Hamrick and Wet Plate Collodion prints by Katherine Rondina.

The exhibition highlights the “lost” art of handmade bookmaking and 19^th century Wet Plate photography and expands the visual lexicon beyond contemporary digital photography and highlights how new insights into the modern may be “found” in the intrinsic value of craftsmanship and physical artifacts.

4. Dean Davis Photography - Tension

Eva Sköld Westerlind and Frank Knapp

Dean Davis Photography is hosting a exhibition of work by Seattle based artist Eva Sköld Westerlind and Spokane photographer Frank Knapp in a show titled “Tension”. The show is sponsored by the Society for Photographic Education 2011 Northwest Region Conference.

The work of both photographers explores the qualities of water, light, and time. Sköld Westerlind writes, “I seek to capture close-up scenes from the water surface that reveal the beauty and the mystery when light meets water in these natural settings.”

5. Kolva Sullivan Gallery - Dangerous Excess of Human Knowledge

W.B. Fontenot

The Kolva-Sullivan Gallery is hosting a solo exhibition of photographic work by Los Angeles photographer W.B. Fontenot. The show is sponsored by the Society for Photographic Education 2011 Northwest Region Conference.

Fontenot’s inspiration derives from the dystopias of authors such as George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. Fontenot creates a parallel universe that mocks our own digital obsession and increased consumption, creating characters that echo the imagery and themes of “1984” and “A Brave New World” as well as other dystopian worlds.

6. Nectar Tasting Room - Alterations

Works by Erin Jennings and Mike Emme

The Nectar Tasting Room is hosting an exhibition of photographic work titled “Alterations” that is sponsored by the Society for Photographic Education 2011 Northwest Region Conference.

Works by Victoria British Columbia photographer Mike Emme and Memphis Tennesee photographer Erin Jennings. The theme Alterations refers to the idea of change and abstraction. Jenning’s work depicts the movements of Burlesque dancers that alter the viewer’s perception of the dancer while Emme’s photographs offer a close-up view of natural processes of decay.

7. Brick Wall Gallery - Looking Back

Works by Jane Goffe and Del Lusk

The Brick Wall Gallery is hosting an exhibition titled, “Looking Back,” sponsored by the Society for Photographic Education 2011 Northwest Regional Conference. The show presents the works of Spokane-based photographer, Del Lusk and Montana artist, Jane Goffe who both utilize historic photographic processes to make modern imagery.

Del Lusk makes traditional silver gelatin fiber prints by hand while Jane Goffe specializes in 19^th century processes of gum bichromate, cyanotype, and silver gelatin which result in prints that are truly one-of-a-kind.

Goffe’s work emphasizes “impressionistic” landscape scenes and Lusk’s most recent work is devoted to mannequins that portray human interaction using inanimate stand-ins.

8. Barili Winery - Abstract Americana

Barili Cellars is hosting a photography exhibition titled “Abstract Americana” which is featuring the work of 6 artist and is sponsored by the Society for Photographic Education in conjunction with the Northwest Region Conference that is happening November 3-6^th in Spokane Washington. The work focuses on the patterns and textures of decay within the rural landscape.

SPE NW Regional Conference 2011

The Society for Photographic Education Northwest Regional Conference
Nov. 3-6, 2011
at Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane, WA

The conference, titled Visual Evolution, will invite photographers, both SPE and non-members, from all over Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. Attendees will include professional imagemakers, instructors, students, hobbyists and collectors who are interested in relevant photographic trends, technologies, and education.
